After weeks of warm dry weather it was light rain that greeted the riders at Malpas in Cheshire,as the FGA Championship visited for Round Five of the 2006 series.
The precipitation falling on top of a dry hard field made traction difficult to find in the early races as the Honda 125 engines struggled for grip.Thankfully the rain passed over and the race action hotted up as the track dried out.
The Golden Helmets were raced for before the main meeting and Tom Perry retained the Junior award, whilst Sam Flowers became the new holder of the Senior prize.
It was good to see the Auto Cadets back on the race card and Sam Conway, of host Club Whitchurch MCC, had everyone talking with his bursts of speed and excellent control.
Conway took victory from Devlin Mann (Son of senior rider Craig Mann) who was making his race debut. To see both riders walking back to the pits, side by side, and talking about their race was great to see.
The Cub Class was won by Rocco Casale who is looking like one to watch for the future.
In the Juniors it was rising star Tom Perry who was victorious, dropping just two points on the day to Claire Frays who took second overall.Third was taken by the fast improving Richard Guest, who is riding really well for a first year novice.Chris Timms took fourth and the hard charging Gary Leadbitter was fifth.
In the Senior Class the other riders were given a masterclass on how to ride in the wet or dry by Dave Meredith who romped to a six race maximum. In second place was Steve Carvill from Coventry who scored many of his points with great overtakes through the field.Defending FGA Champion Len Sanders rode well for third and Sam Flowers kept himself in contention for a tilt at the overall title with steady fourth place.Adrian Guest and Paul Timms shared fifth place on the day with both clocking up a fair few overtakes when required to do so.
It was good to see the track return of Dave Carvill and Glyn Edwards.
Carvill who was returning from a broken wrist scored steadily, but Edward was beset with mechanical problems.
The next round of the Championship takes place at Chetton, near Bridgnorth on Saturday August 12th.
