England International Cycle Speedway star Marcus Wadhams and Irish International Phil Widdas, both from the Great Barr area of Birmingham, were both beaten up after being set upon by a mob of Polish men in the early hours of Monday, after being out celebrating the end of the European Finals.
The riders race for the Birmingham Monarchs Cycle Speedway team, based at Perry Hall Playing Fields, Perry Barr, Birmingham.
Wadhams had earlier qualified for the European Individual Final at Rawicz, one of only three English riders to make the final. Widdas had rode for Ireland in the European Team Final, also at Rawicz, on Saturday night.
Up to 10 Polish men attacked the two Birmingham men, together with Jessica Lamb of Poole, Dorset, the current British Woman’s Cycle Speedway champion, in Leszno, in central Poland
Wadhams was knocked unconscious by numerous blows to the head, whilst Widdas needed stitches to multiple injuries. The pair were treated in Leszno Hospital. It is believed that Lamb was un-injured. Police detained several men.
The pair are now back home recovering.
