Warzone Speedway is a 224-page, eighteen chapter, A4 size book, with over 250 rare photographs, many taken by Second World War Army veterans. The book traces the birth and history of Forces speedway.

Organized initially by the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) and the Royal Corps Signals at Trani, Italy, this Army-approved sporting activity spread throughout Egypt, Libya, Germany, Palestine, Malta and Austria between 1944 and 1945.

Through the veterans’ memories, programmes and Forces archives, the publication uncovers a gap in both speedway and motorcycling history, which can now be filled.

Over twenty ‘Squaddies’ went on to become professional riders, including Split Waterman, Geoff Bennett, Herbie King, Jim Gregory and Eric Boothroyd.

A Rider Directory of over 850 Khaki riders with their competing years and war-zones is a first, and pays due recognition to these previously forgotten ‘speedway stars’.

Copies (signed by the author) are available from Trevor Davies Publishing, 21 Gatton Way, Hucclecote, Gloucester, GL3 3DG. The cost is £20, including postage and packing. Please make cheques payable to Trevor Davies and allow fourteen days for delivery.

“It is my opinion that Warzone Speedway fills a significant gap in the sport’s history. The book uniquely, for the first time, records rare Army speedway meetings, riders and machinery from an era in speedway’s history largely forgotten” – Split Waterman.
