Scotland defeated Ireland today (14th June 2009) in the 2nd leg of the now renamed Murphy Shield by 100 points to 73 (aggregate 168 to 133).
Leading by 8 points from the first leg Scotland started the 2nd leg slowly with an exclusion form Craig Newsome in the first heat ensuring a heat advantage to Ireland. However, a full house in the 2nd heat from for Scotland in the form of a 1st and 2nd place for Jake Slight and Mikey Hewitson respectively kicked started the home side into action.
With Scotland providing 14 of the 18 heat winners the points advantage built up steadily heat by heat ensuring a comfortable victory in the end.
For Scotland Nathan Groves once again showed a great turn of speed to reel off 5 straight victories building on his performance in the previous days Home International. Richard Hunt whilst scoring 14 managed 3 bonus points to prove what a great Team rider he is.
For Ireland, Craig Norton riding from the reserve position scored 17 points which included 3 out of the 4 race winners for Ireland. The other win going to Barry Copping in heat 14 who ended on 13 points.
Both Team Managers, Gav Kennedy and Gary Colby, were delighted with the inaugural running of the Murphy Shield and it was a fitting tribute to the man himself, Johny Murphy, who chose today to retire from the Ireland international scene.
