Steve Hall became the first holder of the Masters of Flattrack title and the third different winner (in as many rounds) of the 2009 Pozzani Silkolene Short Track UK Championship on the half-mile circuit at Amman Valley on Sunday (7/6).
On a weekend when the term flaming June was erased from the dictionaries and the Principality took a hammering from the elements, the excellent drainage and immaculate limestone surface on the Trotting track in Ammanford coped manfully with a 24 hour deluge prior to tapes up, to ensure those enthusiasts braving the horribly unseasonable conditions to watch this motor-sports spectacular were roundly entertained.
The unique combination of the half mile circuit and the loose track surface reacting perfectly to the most testing of circumstances saw racing at high speed but with plenty of opportunities for passing – whether it was STUK supremo and the man behind bringing this exciting motorcycle dirt track racing spectacle to Amman Valley, Peter Boast’s brilliant last bend manoeuvre to snatch third place in the exciting final or former Speedway rider Adie Collins who sought solace out in the wide open spaces of the banking to demonstrate exactly how one expects a member of the famous racing Collins clan to ride. That was the battle going on behind the triumphant Hall though, who managed the rare feat of overhauling reigning STUK champion, series leader and twice before victor at Amman Valley, Marco Belli in an energy-sapping 12 lap Grand Final: the Yorkshire man holding on to become Master of them Hall!
In the competition for the larger machines, the RedMax Thunderbikes local hero Guto Llewellyn from Llanddewi Brefi was well in contention in an exciting final won in the end by Boast – the Lincs man completing a hat-trick of wins in this event at Ammanford. Boston’s Kevin Armstrong mounted on a Rotax was in second with series leader Jon ‘Captain Highside’ Lee just keeping the former Welsh national Moto-cross rider Llewellyn, out of the rostrum berths. Narbeth-based Ian Howells steered his twin-cylindered Suzuki home for championship points too.
Meanwhile in the four-wheeled action on show, there was a first-time winner in the ST Quads sponsored by Welbourns of Wisbech, with Gloucester's debutant Roger Windeback reigning supreme. The younger brother of the junior winner each of the past two years at Amman, defended the family name in the CCM ST Juniors, Derbyshire’s Sam Woolley following ably in the tyre treads of sibling, Tom, seventh this time on his half mile senior debut.
