Astley & Tyldesley hosted the Northern Cup meeting at a wet and windy Gin Pit on Sunday afternoon. Despite the weather, the track held up superbly and an exciting day's racing ensued.

There was a shock in the 1st senior semi-final, as both Edinburgh and Sheffield, winners of the trophy for the past four years, went out. Sheffield were handicapped by the late arrivals of Dariusz Pilas and Pawel Kozlowski, whilst Edinburgh lost Craig Newsome after a heat 8 fall and had no reserve replacement. Stoke were convincing winners, with Heckmondwike snatching the other qualifying spot. Stoke failed to bring their own racing shirts, so wore a spare set of Astley & Tyldesley's green shirts.

Northern Cup 1st Senior Semi-Final result:
Stoke 56 Heckmondwike 43 Sheffield 33 Edinburgh 23.
Heckmondwike: James Carter 13, Darren Kent 13, Dave Robinson 10, Andy Bradshaw 7.
Edinburgh: Mike Hewitson 9, Lee Lawrence 7, Neil McPherson 6, Craig Newsome 1.

Sheffield: Jamie Brown 13, Leon Wild 9, Dariusz Pilas 5, Ricky Wild 4, Pawel Kozlowski 2.
Referee - Mark Winwood (Birmingham).

Hull were convincing winners of the 2nd semi-final. Bury and Astley & Tyldesley were level on points at the halfway stage, before Bury pulled clear in the closing stages to take the 2nd qualifying spot.

Northern Cup 2nd Senior Semi-Final result:
Hull 52 Bury 41 Astley & Tyldesley 34 Stockport 31.
A & T: Remi Burchardt 15, Ben Dickenson 9, Luke Jamson 5, Lars Favrholdt 5.

Hull: Andy Angell 16, Adam Stephenson 11, Simon Plows 9, Matt Beharrell 9, Darren Spencer 7.
Referee - Mick Knowles (Sheffield).

Stoke took control from the start in the Final, leading by 6 points after the first round of races. They continued their pressure and were clear leaders throughout the match, as the rain came down heavily throughout the match. At the halfway stage, Stoke led on 27, whilst Hull were in 2nd place on 18 points, with both Bury and Heckmondwike on 17. Stoke kept their lead to win by 7 points, whilst Hull piled on the pressure to pull clear of the pack to take 2nd place from Heckmondwike, as Bury fell away completely in the 2nd half.

Northern Cup Senior Final result:
Stoke 52 Hull 45 Heckmondwike 35 Bury 26.
Bury: Ben Scranage 9, Neil Howarth 8, Chris Parish 5, Chris Dyson 4.
Heckmondwike: James Carter 13, Darren Kent 11, Dave Robinson 6, Andy Bradshaw 5.

Stoke: Lewis Bates 15, Garry Pearce 14, Errol Thaw 11, Richard Harrison 7, Simon Munden 5.
Referee - Mark Winwood (Birmingham).

Sheffield and Hull had a real tussle throughout the Junior Cup match. No more than 2 points separated the two teams until Hull's Chris Woodward fell in heat 15 and Leon Wild's 2nd place clinched victory for Sheffield. Stockport finished off with three race wins to bring them closer to the top two.
