Christchurch Boys High School pupil, Anthony Knowles defended and retained his NZ Junior Title at Moore Park.
Knowles was just that little more experienced than his rivals and put in some consistent rides, a little tighter than his challengers, to succeed. He overcame some challenges from a former junior champion, Konner McCluskey – Young and current NZ no 2 Bradley Wilson-Dean.
Ryan Terry-Daly won the start of the winner take all final but drifted wide and let the field through.
Brady Mudgway fell and was excluded while in 3rd position. Jake Gillespie made good the restart but the experienced Knowles used his ability to go around the outside to take the win. Gillespie 2nd from Terry-Daly 3rd. The slightly extended junior track proved challenging as the race speed was increased. A good group of riders from Invercargill are quickly coming to terms with the sport with Gillespie slightly ahead of the pack. The boys certainly learn to slide the bike under power on these small ovals and we look forward to when some of these lads progress through to the senior ranks in later years.
Support racing saw the sidecars provide some entertaining racing with Liam Stockman and Blair Lock fighting off some challenges from Karl Ostomy and Shay Sutherland. They looked like they were in for an interesting day until mechanical problems put them out of the meeting. Stockman came under the blow torch of the Auckland combination of Noel McNamara and Glen Bagshaw. Stockman won three of the five outings with McNamara taking the other two. Mark Hanaford and Jade Alsop riding Paul Whitcombe’s bike commanded the third placing all day.
Speedcross rider Nick Korstanje was the surprise of the class equal top scoring with his more experienced elder brother Jason. Nick and Ryan Hampton won the team’s event for the Salesmen from the Mechanics of Jason and Toby Harrison with the Builders team of Lawrence Muldoon and Blair Pupich third.
