The NZ Under 21 Champion, Grant Tregoning won the NZ Short Track Solo title from the defending champion, Larry Ross at Moore Park.
Tregoning put is a superb ride to fight from behind to take the win on the final lap. The former international rider is still the man to best out of the tapes. Ross was again away and looked certain to take the win. Tregoning was behind Dylan Moohan in 3rd place. He worked his way past Moohan and closed on Ross. On entering turn three, Ross appeared to lose power and drifted wide allowing Tregoning to mount a challenge on the inside. Ross defended and was back in control while Tregoning chose to attempt to go around on the last lap. Again Ross’s bike missed and Tregoning executed a superb outside pass to win the title. Moohan took 3rd from the other finalist, John Tuffley.
It was an interesting meeting with some drama throughout the heats. Tregoning changed bikes for the later part of the meeting and looked sharp while Ross is still baffled by an intermittent engine miss causes him to lose power temporarily on entry to the turn. He has managed in several meetings to overcome the impending challenge but not this time. It was not used as an excuse and Ross was more concerned at congratulating the juniors who raced for their NZ Title on the revamped junior track he had been working on the days prior. Tregoning has another title to add to his collection this year before he said he leaves for England next month.
