The North Island composite team ran out the winners in Friday nights meeting.
The South Island riders Jamie Moohan and Craig Blackett filled in admirably and for the first time in two years, the North Island team proved competitive.
Made up of regular rider plus those who attended the Mauger Academy at Moore Park, the North won by 55 to 53 points. It was something the CMSC had wished for, a close encounter. The 2 NZ rider, Jade Mudgway from Palmerston North topped the scoring chart for the team with 16 points. The Moohan brothers Jamie and Dylan chimed in with 14 and 11 points while the 15 year old Auckland flyer Sean Mason scored a very handy 10. For the South, it was local rider Andy Aldridge who headed the South team with 17 points, his only loss to Mudgway. Supporting him was another local Kody Tocher and Invercargill’s’ Alex Cunningham who both picked up 12 points.
The South held the lead up to the third round when the North drew level. North pulled a two point advantage until once again the South came back to level the scores before the final round. It was the second to last heat which sealed it for the North when Mudgway and Dylan Moohan pulled in a 5 to 1 score. A one off race for the top points scores overall was won by Aldridge from Mudgway, Tocher and Jamie Moohan.
A big field of juniors raced Aussie style on the small infield track and were very entertaining. Ivan’s coaching in NZ is now following a proven international system for juniors in a hope that some more competitive seniors will be developed in the future. Plenty of action with Anthony Knowles and Konner McCluskey Young picking up some wins as did Bradley Wilson Dean, Bradley Andrews, Ryan Terry Daley and Devlin Shaw (all Auckland). Knowles, Young, Shaw and Invercargill’s Conner Sprigg and Jack MaCrae plus North Islanders Clayton Thompson and Brady Mudgway are just a few from a good bunch of young riders we will watch with interest in the future.
Sidecar racing created some interest with some new and old combinations returning to the track. Lionel Green and Aaron Ray won all of their four outings with some good runs coming from Liam Stockman and Blair Lock. Josh Wilson and Darren Butt had one of their best meetings. Clint Warwood and Paul Auton indicate that they will be a combination to watch in the future while Sam Richdale and Ben Smith seem to enjoy racing at Moore Park.
It was a big program. 2 hours 35 minutes saw 55 races run.
