Poole Speedway: Pirates clinch 2008 Elite League Championship.

The Poole Castle Cover Pirates pulled off a stunning 60 – 33 victory to beat the Lakeside Hammers and become the Sky Sports Elite League Champions for 2008.

Pirates completely dominated the meeting from the start to brush aside the Hammers and break the magic 60 point barrier for only the second time this season at the Wimborne Road raceway.

“ What a way to win the championship “ said Pirates team manager Neil Middleditch “ The team were magnificent and did everything that was asked of them, and I think you can say we did it with some style. I shall treasure this moment for some time ”

“ In my opinion this is one of the all time great Poole sides. Their team spirit is second to none and they have just got better and better throughout the season. I can’t fault them in any way and I really believe they deserve all the credit they get. ”

Poole opened up with a broadside of race wins, with four maximum wins in the first five races. Lakeside pulled back with a 8 – 1 win in Heat 6, but after that  it was all one way traffic as the Pirates scorched their way to their third Elite League championship title in six years, the previous successes coming in 2003 and 2004.

All eyes will now be on the Pirates as they prepare themselves for the final of the B.S.P.A. Knockout Cup which takes place on the 25 and 26 October.  Poole will go head to head against South Coast rival Eastbourne, with Pirates needing an aggregate win to pull of an historic league and cup double..
