The final meeting at Rye House Speedway for the current season takes place this Saturday 18th October at 7pm.
Ending with a gigantic firework display, the main event will be the annual Ace Of Herts Championship featuring all of the fit Rockets (Stefan Ekberg is still in hospital with his back injury) plus Edward Kennett and Lewis Bridger from Eastbourne, Daniel King from Peterborough, ex-Rocket, Stuart Robson, Ulrich Ostergaard from Reading and completing the field is surprise entry, himself a star Rocket of yesteryear, Andrew Silver who lives only half a mile from the stadium.
In declaring himself as wanting to take part, the 42 year old Silver, son of the promoter, Len, is fully aware that after a 16 year break from racing he will probably be far from race fit, nor up to speed. However, with one eye on a possible return to full time racing, Andrew is keen to test himself against a top class field so that he can gauge the extent to which he will need to improve in order to be competitive at Premier League level.
Initially he will be using equipment loaned for the occasion by Stefan Ekberg so at least he will be aware that his engine will be fast enough, his self declared problem is whether, after such a long break, he can actually handle it.
However, in private practice sessions, Andrew has shown that he is fully capable even if at present he is not yet up to speed.
Len Silver is keeping a watchful eye on his son with the possibility of his
becoming part of the Rockets' squad for the 2009 season. “At present,” he declared recently, “we do not know about the team average requirement for next season, nor what average Andrew will be assessed at after his long lay off, but I can certainly envisage a situation where Andrew could fit in to the team if he feels that he could be competitive”
The 2009 League make up is to be decided at a meeting of promoters on Tuesday October 21st while the Annual General Meeting at which full decisions are made regarding the new season takes place in Spain from 14th to 16th November.
