Rye House Speedway: Cobras Demolish Wildcats in Final League Match.

The Kart Raceway Cobras eased home in a more than comfortable fashion against a lacklustre Weymouth side.

Robert Mear registered a faultless five ride maximum, having delivered a similar score in his other Cobras appearance this year against Plymouth, while Gary Cottham only missed out on his own full house in his last race. The rest of the side scored heavily, too, with six different Cobras bagging race wins and all seven paid for at least one win. The Wildcats, in contrast, seemed overhung following the previous night’s Championship semi-final victory over Plymouth, and managed just three race wins after a stuttering start.

The Cobras certainly dished out the pain in those early stages, pumping out four straight 5-1s from the off and adding a fifth in Heat 6. Weymouth finally stopped the rot when Tactical Rider Andrew Bargh claimed six points in the next race, and looked set to have another success in Heat 8 when Matt Wright slipped past Gary Cottham for the lead, only for the 18 year old to re-pass his rival on the final circuit.

Robert Mear and Cottham left Bargh trailing for the Cobras’ sixth maximum in Heat 10, as the score moved to 42-21, and a seventh maximum followed from Richard Franklin and Andrew Aldridge four races later. The nominated finale saw Mear complete his full house, with Cottham dropping his only points of the day behind the Premier League-experienced Bargh and Lee Smart.

The Cobras have finished seventh of eight teams in the final table, although that simple statistic marks the fact that they suffered just one home defeat in the process. In a tight League in which just eight points have separated the top seven sides, the Cobras’ inability to break their away duck has proven critical to their final position.

Rye House scorers:
Robert Mear   15 (5 rides, max)
Gary Cottham   9+3 (5)
Danny Halsey   10+1 (4)
Andrew Aldridge  6+2 (4)
Robert Smith   6+1 (3)
Richard Franklin  8+2 (5)
Lee Strudwick   5+1 (4)

Weymouth scorers:
Lee Smart   7+2 (5 rides)
Matt Wright   5 (4)
Andrew Bargh   12 (5 rides, inc 6 as a TR)
Karl Mason   1 (4)
Jay Herne   5+1 (4)
Brendan Johnson  2+1 (5)
Kyle Newman   2+1 (4)

Cobras Team for Conference Fours

The Kart Raceway Cobras complete their season in the Conference League Four Team Championship at Stoke this Saturday (October 18th). As previously reported, they have been drawn in Group Two, and will face opposing squads from Buxton, Weymouth and Scunthorpe, with the top two finishers progressing to the Grand Final later that night. Group One, meanwhile will comprise Boston, Plymouth, Redcar and Sittingbourne.

The Cobras’ quartet for the event is: Rob Smith, Andrew Aldridge, Gary Cottham and Richard Franklin.
