Davey Watt believes he could be Pirates good luck Double charm with Poole hot favourites to land their first league title for four years on Monday when they face Lakeside in the grand final second leg six points in front.
The 30-year old Australian has been contracted to the Dorset club since first arriving in the club in 2001, but has been loaned out to other Elite and Premier teams apart from … 2003, 2004 and now 2008, when the club have been chasing league and cup Doubles!
Watt revealed: “I was a reserve in 2003 and suffered an injury in 2004 which meant I couldn’t finish the season in 2004, but I was still a member of both those medal-winning sides.
But it’s ironic that my third season as a full-time Pirate and we are now closing in on another league and cup success. I learned a huge amount in 2003 when I was in the same team as Tony Rickardsson and Leigh Adams. I would like to think it has given me the foundation to make me a better rider. Hopefully, I am a lucky omen for the team. It’s always great being part of a title-chasing outfit and all this Pirates side get on really well … and that has reflected on the track.”
But Watt has warned that the title is far from wrapped up. “It would be easy for management, riders and supporters to get complacent that we are home and dry after winning the first leg away.
“That was a fantastic result, but we will be treating Monday as though we have no advantage.
“The team were terrific at Lakeside and more of the same on Monday will see us home. Let’s get the job done and then celebrate, not before.”
