Reading Speedway: Racers leave Smallmead on record home defeat.

The Racers completed what turned out to be their last team match at Smallmead and, against a rampant Redcar side, they suffered their worst-ever home defeat in the club's 40 seasons of racing, losing 60-33.

Reading were up against it from the start because Tomas Suchanek wasn't present and, having ridden in the Czech Golden Helmet the previous day, they were denied a facility in his absence. This meant they had to complete three races with only one rider.

With 16 points, Ulrich Ostergaard headed the scoring and recorded almost half of his side's paltry total.

A processional opening race saw Gary Havelock and Josh Auty card maximum points over Mark Lemon, before Benji Compton and Arlo Bugeja doubled the Bears' advantage with a second successive 5-1.

James Grieves took heat three from Ostergaard, with Chris Kerr grabbing the odd-point after passing Chris Mills on the first lap.

Tom P. Madsen and Warwick made the start in heat four, but Ty Proctor soon moved into second place. Then, after chasing down Madsen, the brilliant young Aussie found a route past the Dane on lap three for an excellent win.

Trailing 18-6, Tim Sugar opted to hand Ostergaard the black and white helmet colour in heat five and, after seeing off an early challenge from Auty, the brilliant Dane charged on to collect 6 points.

Lemon defeated his hard-charging compatriot, Proctor, in heat six, prior to a re-start being required in the next race after a first bend crash had seen Racers' guest Andrew Bargh questionably excluded.

The re-run saw Kerr and Grieves post a 5-1 over Madsen, as Reading continued to flounder on the night.

Auty flew to victory from Warwick in heat eight and, with Bugeja in third spot, Redcar extended their lead to 33-18.

The Racers' disappointment continued in the next race, as Proctor posted his second success of the evening – this time over Ostergaard.

The visitors continued to pile on the points in heat ten, as Grieves and Kerr raced to a maximum over Lemon.

A superb second bend move took Madsen underneath Havelock in race eleven and he went on to card an excellent win, thereby providing a bit of cheer on an otherwise abject evening.

Ostergaard claimed his second race win of the evening in heat twelve, while Grieves and Compton packed the minor scoring positions.

The Bears were able to record their fifth and sixth 5-1s of the one-sided match in heats thirteen and fourteen, before a re-run nominated race saw the team from Cleveland register their one and only duck of the night after Auty had fallen alarmingly on the home straight of lap one in the original running.
