On October 4th at Champion Speedway the sun was out all day, the skies were clear, the track was in great shape and Adam "The Missile" Mittl was again unstoppable, taking home his fifth straight scratch main event win.
The evening started with the handicap program and a round of heats. Mittl came all the way off the 60 yard line to pass all 5 riders for the first place points. In second was Shawn "Steamboat" Engel with Craig Estelle in third place. Russ Cornell was fourth, Mark Bradley fifth and Brian Bailey sixth. Cole Farwell made a strong showing in the other heat race, winning it from the starting line with smooth control. David Clark was second with Corey Brookes in third. Tuff McBride was fourth and Lenny McBride fifth with "Dangerous" Dan Harbst in last.
Farwell was hot in the semis again when he defeated second placed Brookes. Len McBride took the last transfer to the Main with a good third. Cornell was fourth and Estelle fifth with Bailey gaining a learning experience at the back. Clark was all business in the other semi and he scored the win with Tuff McBride hot on his heels for second. Mittl held onto the last spot for the Main event with a third. Bradley was fourth, Harbst fifth and Engel had a DNF.
Clark and Tuff McBride had a great battle in their scratch ride with the two going side by side for nearly four laps. Clark was able to just nip him at the line on the inside. Estelle was third with Cornell fourth and Engel fifth. Mittl hopped out in front in the next outing but Len McBride used his many years of experience to make a great pass on Mittl for the win. Jason Bonsignore was third, Brookes fourth and Bradley fifth.
Mittl got some revenge on Len McBride in the semis with a win. McBride took the transer position with second. Clark and Estelle were third and fourth and would have to go to the last chance. Bonsignore and Tuff McBride gated evenly in the second semifinal but McBride roared up the inside of the track in turn two into the lead. That is how they finished with Brookes third and Cornell fourth.
Estelle was leading the last chance but Clark made a great inside pass on him and went on to win. Brookes was also able to pass Estelle and take second with Estelle third and Cornell fourth.
Bonsignore drew the pole for the scratch main and should have been a factor but missed the start and Tuff McBride got into the first turn even with Mittl who was off gate three. Mittl outdragged McBride down the back straight though and rode away to his fifth scratch win in a row on his Justice Brothers/NGK Spark Plugs/Red Line/K&N/Regina/Oury JAWA. McBride was second, Len McBride third, Clark fourth and Bonsignore fifth.
Farwell was the big story again in the handicap main with a pole to pole victory. Tuff McBride earned another nice second with a last lap pass on Clark who then fell and that led to Mittl gaining third place.
Champion Speedway may race a couple more times with a possible Saturday afternoon race on October, 18 at 3pm.
