Weymouth Speedway: Wildcats left fixture-less after Robins pull the plug on friendly

At the last minute,  defeated Elite League play off semi-finalists Swindon have disappointingly pulled out of this Fridays challenge fixture with Weymouth at the Wessex Stadium citing lack of riders for their decision. This has left the Wildcats without a home fixture this week in the vital run up to the Conference League Play-off's. Wildcats chairman Phil Bartlett who has been in constant touch with the Swindon promotion over the last two weeks was left fuming over the events and is dismayed that the Conference League clubs are treated with such disdain by the sports leading lights.

An angry Phil Bartlett said “I made numerous phone calls on Wednesday to riders and promoters across the country trying to put a meeting together but it was all in vain.  It looks like there will be no competitive speedway for the many Wildcats supporters this week although an impromptu training session for the team may well go ahead on Friday evening.”

The Wildcats hit the road on Saturday for their trip to Hertfordshire to race their final league fixture of the 2008 campaign against the Rye House Cobras. The Weymouth side will be without heat leader Jay Herne who will head to Scotland with his Premier League team – Birmingham - for the Premier Shield Contest with the Berwick Bandits. The Wildcats will use the rider replacement facility to cover for Herne after the Conference League Coordinator controversially barred Wildcat squad member Luke Priest from taking his place in the side. It’s a bizarre decision that has left a very bitter taste with both Luke and the Weymouth management, never mind the disappointed supporters. Tim Webster, just back from injury would also have been in contention for a team place but is unfortunately out of the country further recuperating from his recent broken ankle.

Weymouth’s next home meeting will be on Saturday 11th of October when the Wildcats will be battling for a place in the play-off final against bitter rivals the Plymouth Devils.

Any riders interested in riding at the practice session on Friday night should contact Phil Bartlett on 07841 042475.
