After rain came down all day at Champion Speedway, it was a miracle the program got underway at all but Russ "Doctor Dirt" Cornell spun some magic on the track surface and racing was underway by 8pm.

Keith Hawkins won the first handicap heat as he came from the 30 yard line to power past Andy "Crawfish" Crawford early on for the lead. Crawford would end up second with Lenny McBride in third and Cornell in fourth. In other handicap heat racing it was the young standout, Corey Brookes, who won handily from the 20 yard line with David Clark in second, Adam Mittl third and Shawn Engel fourth.

Mittl was back out in the first handicap semi and was able to come all the way from the 50 yard line to win. Trailing him to second, also from the 50, was McBride. Taking the final transfer was Cornell. Brookes was again the man to beat as he rolled to an easy win in the other semifinal. Clark passed Hawkins for second before the finish but Hawkins remained in the last transfer position. Crawford was fourth.

Track promoter, Jason Bonsignore, took some exhibition laps at intermission time and it was a good thing he did as only moments later, when Hawkins had to pull out of the scratch program with an engine failure, Bonsignore was pressed into action as a fill in for Hawkins after not having raced at Champion since August of 2007.

Bonsignore made a nice gate and led his scratch heat into turn one but Brookes was able to use his light body and undrpowered motor to hook up on the ultra-slick surface and sped by on the inside. They finished one and two with Clark third and Crawford fourth. Mittl defeated McBride with Cornell in third and Engel in fourth in their heat ride.

Mittl was very smooth again in the semis. He used the only dirt line on the whole track to pass Bonsignore and they were first and second at the conclusion with transfers to the final. McBride was able to win over Brookes in the last semi with Clark having to go through the last chance.

Clark took early control of the last chance and never relinquished. Cornell had a good battle with Engel but came out ahead for second.

The scratch main was the most exciting race of the evening. Bonsignore made the start again and was leading it out of turn two when Mittl was able to pull up to him around the outside. The two Justice Brothers/Red Line Oil/NGK Spark PLugs/Oury/K&N riders were neck and neck for two more laps until Mittl finally used what little dirt was left on the icy, wet, Fall surface to get a drive by. McBride was smart enough to see what Mittl was doing and followed him through into second place. Mittl went on for his second win in a row at Champion with McBride second, Bonsignore third, Brookes fourth and Clark fifth.

The handicap main was all Brookes. The impressive 15 year old was not to be beaten. He was never in danger of being passed in the six lap affair en route to the victory. Mittl was super fast though while taking a solid second place. Clark was third and McBride fourth.
