It’s Dirt track motorcycle racing with a difference at the Norfolk Arena on Saturday (4th. October) with a high-flying return to its long-established national home of the Short Track UK series!
It’s the most English of things to declare “time for tea”..: well, in this event, Norfolk’s going all Stateside, by saying it’s “time for TT”!!
Yes, for a second time, after the (literally) high excitement of last year’s adventure over the jumps, this penultimate Round of the Silkolene-sponsored, USA-style dirt track racing-based STUK championship is going up, up and away again – with dirt track racing’s version of the steeplechase!
Now, the term TT over here in UK motorcycling circles is synonymous with the Isle of Man and the 100 years there of the Tourist Trophy races. In many sports – especially cycling – TT means Time Trail. But no, that’s NOT the sort of TT to be on show on Saturday on the King’s Lynn Speedway circuit!
No, the Short Track TT stands for Track and Trail – and fans should stand by to see right-hand turns and jumps added into the racing mix. Last year the unsuspecting field were presented with a five feet high jump with no landing ramp! With the bar literally always being raised on this rapidly growing sport, organisers are being tight-lipped over the obstacle awaiting Saturday’s field!
On the under-card will be the Sunnydecks Thunderbikes.
Former King’s Lynn and Boston skipper Pete Boast is the brain-child behind this flattracking phenomenon and currently leads the Thunderbikes standings, in an event he won last term.
Meanwhile, the Silkolene STUK event, sponsored by the world’s premier manufacturers of motorcycle lubricants, is building to a crescendo this term with reigning champ, the Italian stallion, Marco Belli (who won over the jumps at the Norfolk Arena last year and was recently crowned European Flattrack champion too) leading from Boast, the round winner here at King's Lynn back in April. Currently in third is Adie Collins of the famous Collins clan from Manchester.
There’s a strong local Speedway flavour in the guests aiming to challenge these Short Track specialists, with Boston Speedway skipper and King’s Lynn asset, Simon Lambert and Aussie sensation (and the local club, the Stars’ new signing for 2009), Darcy Ward aiming to impress!
Youth development is of major import too and that’s covered thanks to the www.ccmmotorcyclesuk.com 2008 Junior Short Track championship for riders aged 15 years and younger: with, leading the way again, newly crowned ACU British Junior champ, Tom Woolley from Derbyshire.
Lastly on the packed menu for Saddlebow on Saturday are the amazing four-wheeled practitioners of pace who are the Short Track Quads: starring in an event backed by Welbourns of Wisbech. The Quads are up to Round Four with Alan Hooker from Caister leading the way!
Star rider on the STUK night and it can be in ANY of the different disciplines will gain a unique accolade too: thanks to rider of the night sponsors, Helmets4u.co.uk who will be providing a brand-new skid-lid to the most entertaining and enterprising competitor on show today. Winner at King’s Lynn last tine out was Boston-based Kevin Armstrong.
