Former National Champion Bobby 'Boogaloo' Schwartz took home his second Warren Russell Cup with a popular victory at the world famous Costa Mesa Speedway.

At the start Ricky Wells clamped down on inside-starting Shawn Mad Dog McConnell, but Schwartz made an even better start from gate four and beat both riders to turn one.  Schwartz found plenty of traction exiting turn two and extended his lead on the back straight.

Jimmy Fishback made a daring dive between Wells and McConnell to take third, but drifted wide on the front straight and McConnell took third back.  Meanwhile, Schwartz, who celebrated his 52nd birthday last month, was smooth as ever and cruised the rest of the way for the win.  Wells finished second, McConnell was third, Mike Faria finished fourth, and Fishback finished fifth.

Wells kicked off the heats with a convincing win in race one.  McConnell passed Fishback to win the second heat.  Faria beat Brad Sauer to win the third heat.  Schwartz ended the first round with a win over John Marquez.

Round two began the earned-handicapped format, being used at Costa Mesa for the first time in 2008.  Jason Ramirez began the round with a win.  Russell Green followed his young contemporary’s victory with one of his own in the next race.  Neil Facchini held off Wells to win event 11.  Schwartz ended the second round as the only undefeated rider after weaving through traffic to win.

Robbie Sauer started the final round with a victory.  Dale Facchini led all four laps of event 18 for the win.  Wells took his second victory of the evening ahead of Brad Sauer.  Fishback held off Schwartz to win the final heat.

A runoff to determine the final three spots in the semis had to be restarted after a scary crash involving Ramirez in turn one brought an abrupt end to the first attempt.  Ramirez was down for several minutes, but got up to restart.  Neil Facchini, Green, and Dale Facchini finished one-two-three to advance to the semis.

Wells got the best start in the first semi, but McConnell went by on the inside for the lead and the win with Wells following him into the main.  Faria won the second semi with Schwartz getting second to also make the main.  Fishback handily won the Last Chance to book the final place in the main.

Philip Harmatiuk fended off all challenges to win the Support Main Event.  Rick Farron finished second, Tyson Burmeister was third, Carl Gazafy finished fourth, and Jim Painter was fifth.

Tom Bostic led the Support B Main Event before falling and handing the lead, and the win, to Jeff Remington.  Norman Graham was second, Mike Boyle finished third, and Bostic was fourth.

Joey Holt led all four laps to win the Youth First Division Main Event.  Austin Novratil was second, Youth National Champion Brad Pappalardo finished third, and Gino Manzares was fourth.

Chad Hoyt led the Youth Second Division Main Event for three laps before falling in turn two.  River McDougall was the beneficiary and took the win.  Rocco Scopellite was second, Hoyt remounted to finish third, and Samuel Ramirez was fourth.

Nicky Reimer won the Youth Third Division Main Event with Major Davis finishing in second and Brad Painter coming in third.
