Ricky Wells used a last-turn, last-lap pass to edge Mike Faria and win the final Speedway Motorcycle main event of the regular season Wednesday night at Industry Speedway.
The sixth victory of the season for Wells concluded the 19-race track championship competition and set the stage for next week’s (Sept. 17) AMA Speedway California State Championship, which will have the largest purse in its history.
Wells, 17, who recently successfully defended his U.S. Under 21 title, followed the veteran Faria out of the starting gate on the restart of the 4-lap feature and pressured him until the final turn, when he got the inside line coming off Turn 4 on the 150-yard track and won the drag race to the checkered flag.
Wells, of Yorba Linda, had taken the lead on the first start, but that advantage was erased when a second-turn mishap left Faria, Shawn McConnell and Bobby Schwartz lying on the dirt track and forced a restart.
Following Wells and Faria to the finish were Shaun Harmatiuk, McConnell and Schwartz, with Harmatiuk on a borrowed motorcycle and McConnell on a backup bike. Fortunately for McConnell, 49, he had wrapped up the track championship by advancing to the main event.
Charlie Venegas, of San Bernardino, the 2007 champion, led all riders with nine main event victories, but missed a chance to tie his record of 10 regular-season wins when he failed to qualify for the feature.
