As eyes start to turn towards the 2009 speedway season Scunthorpe Speedway have gone on record that they are firmly committed to the league in its current format.
There have been suggestions that the league is set to split but Promoter Rob Godfrey doesn’t feel it is viable. “How can you split a sixteen team league? Fixtures would be repetitive and clubs would lose fans as a result.
We’ve seen it in the Conference League. No disrespect to Boston and Plymouth but we faced them too many times over the last two years. This year has been sensational for Scunthorpe Speedway in so many ways, not least the variety of opposition that the fans have seen. The Premier League is the best league in world speedway. Why would anyone want to split it in two.
I just can’t see it happening as it would be suicidal. Certainly Scunthorpe Speedway are firmly committed to the league in its current format. Sixteen teams is about right to give everyone a season full of meaningful fixtures”.
