Birmingham Monarchs Cycle Speedway team eased to their sixth successive Midland League win at Perry Hall Playing Fields last Sunday afternoon.
They easily accounted for Leicester Lions to notch a club record of six straight league wins, their best run of results for 20 years. In so doing, they confirmed their second place position in the Midland League, just behind title favourites Wednesfield Aces.
Persistent rain made conditions difficult for both teams at the start of the match as the opening two heats were drawn. Birmingham took the lead in heat 3 after some fine team riding from the Winwood brothers – Carl and Mark.
Dashing teenager Aarron Deery celebrated his call-up to first team action by winning heat 4 and with Polish ace Dominik Rycharski in second place, Birmingham jumped into a 24-16 lead.
Rycharski teamed up with rising star Chris Timms, the British Under 19s champion, in heat 7 to take maximum points as Birmingham consolidated their advantage.
Deery confirmed his growing maturity by romping away to take heat 9, as the half way mark was reached with Birmingham on 53, with Leicester trailing on 37.
Leicester halted the Birmingham advance by sharing three of the first four races of the second period. However, Birmingham soon resumed total dominance by taking heats 14, 15 and 16 by the maximum margin as they coasted home.
Rycharski rounded off a superb individual performance by winning heat 17 to top the Monarchs scorecard. He was well supported by another fine showing from Carl Winwood, who notched 17, dropping just a single point to an opponent.
Reserve Deery completed a stunning three ride maximum, Chris Timms produced a superb team riding performance by netting four bonus points to add to his haul of 14, whilst unlucky falls to star man Marcus Wadhams and Welsh international Mark Winwood restricted their tallies.
Birmingham point scores:
1 Dominik Rycharski 18, 2 Chris Timms 14, 3 Marcus Wadhams 13, 4 Nathan Groves 12, 5 Carl Winwood 17, 6 Mark Winwood 14, 7 Aarron Deery 12, 8 Paul Timms 7.
