On this particular evening at Champion Speedway the weather was nice and track man, Russ "Doctor of Dirt" Cornell, had a nicely prepared race track for the riders.
The super smooth track allowed for some of the lesser experienced riders to do well in the early handicap heats. In heat one it was Cornell himself who showed everyone the way around the 1/8 mile bullring by taking the lead from start to finish. Second to him was Josh Carr and third went to the hard-charging Casey Donholt. Young teen, super talent, Corey Brookes rode his 250cc JAWA from the 20 yard line in heat two to claim victory over Adam Mittl and Mikey Buman in that order. East Coast great, Warren Diem, came all the way off the 60 yard line and passed the whole field to win his heat race. His son, Jesse, was second with Stefan Laessig third. In the last heat it was newcommer, "Jammin Jeff" Garlinghouse who surprised everyone as he held off Tuff McBride to take the checkered flag. Gene Bonsignore was third for the last transfer.
Semifinal number one was very exciting as Jesse Diem and Mittl had a drag race to the end and a photo finish with Jesse getting it by inches. Mikey Buman was third for the last transfer to the final. Warren Diem was fourth with Brookes fifth and Cornell sixth. Tuff McBride was hot in the second semi. He came off the 50 and passed 3 riders early on to take the lead and he never gave it up. Carr was second with Donholt third, Bonsignore fourth and Garlinghouse last.
Donholt and Mittl had a good tussle in thier scratch ride with Donholt emerging as the victor. Third went to Len McBride and fourth was Keith Hawkins. Buman and McBride had the best race of the night in the second heat. Buman gated McBride and was leading on the second lap but McBride came charging by him on the outside and the two battled elbow to elbow for the last laps with Buman taking the win. Jesse Diem was third and Jerry Harman fourth. Warren Diem stayed strong in the last scratch heat with a pole to pole win over Carr and Bonsignore. Cornell was last.
In the scratch semis, Donholt opened it up with a 3 point haul over Warren Diem. Buman was third and Jesse Diem fourth. The second semi saw Mittl make a great start and lead it home over second placed Tuff McBride. Len McBride was third and Bonsignore fourth.
On the first try and the last chance Len McBride and Bonsignore gated evenly off gate one and two and led into the first turn. Buman tried to go around Bonsignore but didn't quite get it turned and collected Jesse Diem. Buman got a break when the ref ordered a full restart. On the second atempt it was all McBride though as he sped off with the win.
In the scratch main it was Donholt again drawing the pole position and making it work. He gated strongly on his Holden's disposal JAWA and he and Tuff McBride mirored each other in first and second place for four laps to finish in that order. Mittl was third with Warren Diem fourth and Len McBride fifth.
The handicap saw a new face in the winners circle as young Jesse Diem put in a great race for 6 laps to take it from the 20 yard line. Mittl was a very close second with Buman third.
Things are going so well at Champion this year that the track has now announced it will race at least three Saturdays in September.
