Coventry Speedway: Match report - Bees 59 Peterborough Panthers 36

THE Buildbase Bees raced to an emphatic win at Brandon on Friday - but saw two riders injured in an horrific Heat 7 crash.

Hans Andersen (against his former club), Chris Harris and Olly Allen all scored paid maximums for the Bees, who were reduced to five riders halfway through the meeting and had to go into two races fielding just one competitor.

The accident occurred on the back straight in Heat 7 when race leader Simon Stead suffered a complete engine failure, and team-mate Robbie Kessler had no space to avoid him, sending both Bees riders down heavily as the Peterborough riders just made it through.

Stead and Kessler were able to walk away after treatment, which was remarkable in itself, but Stead has suffered a suspected broken collarbone and Kessler hand and arm injuries, and both were taken to hospital for X-rays.

The other five Bees riders all ensured that the Panthers would not take advantage, even if the initial 16-point lead was eroded by an 8-1 in the re-run of Heat 7.

Andersen and Allen, already proving a strong combination, teamed up for three 5-1s and Ben Barker put in another magnificent performance at reserve.

Barker had the crowd on their feet with spectacular passing moves on Claus Vissing in Heats 2 and 4, but he surpassed himself in Heat 11, when the Panthers threw in their best rider on the night, Daniel King, for a tactical substitute ride.

When everyone was expecting Barker to defend second place against the double-points King, he shot inside a surprised Lukas Dryml on the third lap for a famous win.

Barker then combined with Andersen for maximum points over King in Heat 13, and with Allen having completed four unbeaten rides the Coventry top two of Andersen and Harris brought home the team's sixth 5-1 of the night in Heat 15.

Manager Peter Oakes said: "The win was tinged with sadness because of yet more injuries, and sometimes you feel we're a bit jinxed this season, although we accept that other teams have had their problems too.

"I can't remember a season when we've lost so many riders during a meeting, and to have to go without a rider in a race is not good for spectators, but I'm not sure what we can do about that.

"It was a pleasing result, obviously Peterborough were below-strength without Ryan Sullivan, but we had some tremendous performances throughout the team.

"It was Hans's first maximum for us, and I also think he's surprising a few people with his team ethic, riding behind Olly in one race and also knocking it off to allow Chris round him. We're also delighted for Olly to get his first maximum in the Elite League."

BUILDBASE BEES 59: Chris Harris 14+1, Hans Andersen 13+2, Ben Barker 13+2, Olly Allen 10+2, Billy Janniro 6+1, Simon Stead 2, Robbie Kessler 1.

PETERBOROUGH 36: Daniel King 15, Kenneth Bjerre 10, Henning Bager 3+2, Lukas Dryml 3+1, Claus Vissing 3, Kozza Smith 2, Karol Zabik r/r.
