The Weymouth Doonan Wildcats took a step closer to securing a place in the Conference League play-offs with a comprehensive 56-37 victory over the Redcar Cubs on Saturday. Flying Aussie Jay Herne continues his fine form and scored a superb 15 point maximum. Matt Wright made his delayed debut for the Wildcats and scored a very satisfactory 11 + 1. However, the star of the show was undoubtedly young reserve Kyle Newman. In a breathtaking display the fearless sixteen year old rookie scored 10 + 1 and continues to improve week by week. Heat eight saw the Poole based rider stalk Cubs Gary Beaton for three laps before diving past him to join team mate Matt Wright for a 5 – 1. However, there were more fireworks to come in heat twelve when Kyle was out gated by team mate Luke Priest and Cubs Jade Mudgway. Kyle stalked his team mate before blasting past him and Kiwi Mudgway down the back straight to take the lead and the heat victory much to the delight of the home crowd. The meeting was marred by the second
heat crash of Ben Reade who crashed after running wide on the last bend of the last lap and getting hooked up on the fence. Ben suffered a broken bone in his hand.
The Doonan Wildcats face a tough weekend as they travel to Devon for the restaged league fixture against local rivals the Plymouth Devils on Friday. Saturday sees the Scunthorpe Saints step into battle at the Wessex Stadium and team manager Jem Dicken is bullish about his teams chances both home and away. He commented “I was delighted with Matt Wright on his debut and happy that most of the team are now firing on all cylinders. I am looking forward to this weekend and am quietly confident of causing an upset at Plymouth and of taking the points against Scunthorpe.”
