Cycle Speedway: Monarchs race to fifth successive win.

Birmingham Monarchs Cycle Speedway team raced to their fifth successive Midland League victory with a thumping 68-105 win at local rivals Sandwell last Sunday.

It was Birmingham’s biggest away win for many years and their best result at the tricky and tactical Sandwell circuit for more than a decade. It was also a second successive away win in a row after Birmingham’s recent victory at Sheffield.

The Birmingham racers started in brilliant style with the ultra strong Dominik Rycharski and Chris Timms pairing taking full points from heat 1. The inform Marcus Wadhams easily accounted for heat 2 before the Winwood brothers, Carl and Mark, sped away to take maximum points from heat 3.

When veteran star Paul Timms took heat 5, it recorded an astonishing sequence of five different heat winners in the opening five races. This illustrated Monarchs increasing strength in debpt, which has been a hallmark of there superb performances this year.

The Monarchs winning run continued for the remainder of the first half, with Rycharski, Wadhams and Winwood (Carl) all notching further successes.

Even fast improving reserve Aarron Deery, promoted to first team action, got in on the act by taking the chequered flag in heat 11. This ensured the remarkable statistic of every Birmingham rider winning at least one race.

The swashbuckling Nathan Groves provided rich entertainment in heat 12 by racing through from the back to join partner Wadhams for yet another 7-3 maximum heat win for the rampant Monarchs as they moved 30 points in front at Sandwell 43 – Birmingham 73.

In the latter stages Monarchs top international stars Rycharski and Wadhams completed individual maximums as Monarchs consolidated their second position in the championship standings.

Birmingham point scorers: 1 Dominik Rycharski 19, Chris Timms 12, 3 Marcus Wadhams 18, 4 Nathan Groves 13, 5 Mark Winwwod 13, 6 Carl Winwood 12 7 Aarron deery 8 and 8 Paul Timms 10.

Birmingham are next in action this Saturday at Leicester in the British Senior Club Championships when the Monarchs are drawn against hosts Leicester, Sheffield and Norwich based Hethersett in four a side competition.

Birmingham team manager Phil Widdas has named a six man squad and will name his final four shortly before the start.
