On Saturday afternoon Scunthorpe Speedway ran the fifth round of their Summer Championship with 33 riders in three classes racing over 57 races.
Scunthorpe Saints rider Stuart Parnaby took his second win of the championship in the Open Class defeating the Redcar Cubs pairing of Jade Mudgway and Jitendra Duffill along with Kye Norton in the final. The Support Class saw the Belgian father and son duo of Willy and Wim Kennis take the top two slots ahead of the North Lincolnshire pairing of Adam Oughtibridge and Andy Harrison whilst James Sarjeant was joined on the rostrum by Shane Hazleden and Cameron Hoskins in the Youth 500 Class.
With the wind continually drying the track conditions weren’t perfect but Parnaby had no problems in winning all six of his rides and close the gap on Duffill at the head of the championship standings by three points. Duffill, winner in the last round had to settle for fourth place this time around and will be looking over shoulder as other riders, like Parnaby and his fellow Saints’ rider Mike Pickering, complete their fourth qualifying rounds.
The Support Class championship standings now see five riders within five points of each other after leading riders, Montana Jowett and Duncan Towler had a nasty crash when they met in heat 40. Jowett, who had won the previous two rounds she had entered injured her shoulder in the crash whilst Towler was shook up and had damage to his bike. With neither able to continue the class became a shootout between the holidaying Belgians, Willy Kennis and his son Wim. Father Willy won through in the final but Chris Baldwin’s fifth place was enough to see the Northamptonshire rider climb to the top of the standings whilst Scunthorpe’s Adam Oughtibridge and Barnetby Le Wold’s Andy Harrison showed good form to make it to the final.
In the youth class six riders lined-up and put on a good show. Although at various stages of development there were some close battles and, most importantly, the lads looked to enjoy their afternoon. Shane Hazleden gave James Sarjeant a rare defeat around the Eddie Wright Raceway but Sarjeant won the next twice they met whilst Hazleden fell whilst chasing in heat 42. Cameron Hoskins won a three way battle for third place against Jack Butler, who will rue a couple of falls, and Chris Bint. The least experienced of the group, Kyle Howarth, improved as the afternoon went on after recovering from two early falls.
The sixth round of the Summer Championship takes place on Saturday 30th August and riders are encouraged to book early if they are to avoid missing out. Meetings are open to all-comers on a first come, first served basis but places are limited to sixteen riders in the ‘Open’ and ‘Support’ classes plus eight riders in the two youth classes. In the youth section it is the turn of the 250cc riders in round six. Places can be booked by contacting Richard Hollingsworth by e-mail richard@scunthorpespeedway.com
