It took three tries to get the main event started Wednesday night, and when it was over Ricky Wells had his third win in four weeks.
Wells, 17, of Yorba Linda, survived more than the usual contact and close racing to beat Shawn McConnell, Jimmy Fishback, Buck Blair and Neil Facchini in the four-lap feature at Industry Speedway.
The top three were in tight quarters for the first half of the race and Wells said he thought they were right behind him all the way. But in fact McConnell and Fishback had touched wheels in Turn 2 on lap 3 and that had given Wells a big lead.
Wells had taken the lead on the first start, which was aborted when Facchini fell in Turn 4 at the end of the opening lap. Then on the second start, Wells, Blair and Facchini jostled each other at the start, with Wells falling between Turns 1 and 2 and McConnell laying his motorcycle down to avoid the fallen rider.
McConnell and Blair were the only multiple heat winners, McConnell capturing his first two races and Blair his second and third. But while Blair was able to get a good start and hold off Wells in their semifinal, McConnell had mechanical problems and pulled off after the first of the semifinal won by Fishback. He was able to beat Tim Gomez in the Last Chance qualifier to get the final spot in the main event, however.
Joe Jones and Jimmy Olsen scored another Sidecar main event win. Rudy Laurer, of Gardena, won the Second Division main, for mid-level riders, and Tim McGrath, of San Gabriel, took the novice Third Division main. Austin Novratil, of Huntington Beach, and Nicolas Varner, of Corona, won the Youth and PeeWee features, respectively.
