Scunthorpe Speedway: Godfrey thanks council and fans.

Scunthorpe Speedway Promoter Rob Godfrey is delighted to announce that North Lincs Council have made a decision yesterday afternoon to close the travellers’ site that neighbours the track.

The decision is in response to a catalogue of theft and damage that has gone on in the area over recent weeks and whilst there will undoubtedly be some more tough times to endure the decision is a giant step forward.

“I just want to thank the councillors who have put in so much effort to help us.  Councillors Sue Armitage, Tony Gosling, Len Foster and Mick Grant have been very supportive and I don’t know where we would be with out their help.  The last two weeks have been the worst since we started here four years ago and it is really bringing me down.  There have been so many incidents, not just the ones reported in the paper, and I really feared for the club’s future.  I still do because until these criminals are moved from our doorstep we are in real danger.

However, yesterday’s decision, which has been backed up by the council’s solicitors, is certainly good news.  The supporters have also played their part.  Writing letters to the council and the petition that was signed really have helped and for that I want to say a big thank you.  The police have also helped but like the council their hands are tied to some extent.  Let’s just hope we can get through the next few weeks until this group have been moved on”.
