Reading Speedway has today confirmed that this current campaign will be the final year that they race at Smallmead Stadium.
The venue has been their home for some 33 years, since they took up residence in 1975.
The club is scheduled to be moving to a brand new stadium in time for the 2009 season and plans look to be going well for this move.
Club owner Mark Legg had this message for fans and supporters: “This will be our last year of racing at Smallmead and, come the end of the campaign, the final time that speedway will be seen at this stadium.
“I urge everyone to come out and show your support for the Racers in our last season at this historic speedway venue.
“We are still looking to be in the new stadium in time for the 2009 season, but, in the meantime, I trust that everyone will come along and show their support for the team during the run-up to the end of the club’s Smallmead tenure.”
Legg went on to say: “We are planning a big ‘End-of-an-Era’ celebration as a final meeting this season in order to say a fond farewell to Smallmead.”
It is now confirmed that the End-of-an-Era meeting, which will also incorporate a celebration of 40 seasons of Reading Speedway will take place on Sunday 19 October. Plans are now in full swing for this and more details will be released in due course.
The Racers also have some special events planned during the summer for this final year at Smallmead and further updates on these will also be released very shortly.
