Mildenhall Speedway: Road trip misery for Fen Tigers.

The Mildenhall Barmy Army Fen Tigers search for a league point continues after two defeats in as many days on the first of their Northern Tours this season.

Saturday night saw them fall to a heavy 64 to 28 point defeat at Workington and this was followed up on Sunday by a 55 37 defeat at Glasgow.

The meeting at Workington started with Mildenhall guest Ricky Ashworth breaking the tapes and having to start 15 metres behind everyone else. However he made light of that handicap and by the 2nd bend on lap one was already second. The only other race to bring cheer to the Fen Tigers was Jan Graversen win in heat six.

Mildenhall put up a better fight at Glasgow with guest Ricky Ashworth again impressing as he has always done when he dons the Fen Tigers race jacket. Both Michal Rajkowski and Jan Graversen impressed with three race wins between them. Unfortunately Rajkowski had to spend his evening at the local hospital after a fall left him with a wrist injury. He should, however, recover in time for next weeks meeting against Workington at West Row.

The lack of luck experienced by the Fen Tigers this year was highlighted by a bizarre referring decision in heat 14. Matt Wright clearly experienced mechanical problems almost immediately after the start and had to nurse his bike around for four laps to gain a point, Rajkowski had already been excluded from the race, only to be excluded for not trying to race. Fortunately for young Matt he was not left out of pocket as a whip round by some very generous Glasgow fans paid him for the money he lost.

Mildenhall Promoter Simon Barton said,” It was a difficult time for us to undertake a northern tour with all of the rider problems we have been experiencing but it was good to see Jan Graversen performing so well on tracks he hadn’t even seen before. I would also like to thank Marek Mroz for driving all the way from Poland at short notice to take his place in the team.”

Team Manger Laurence Rogers said, “Good efforts were made by all the riders. Workington showed their class and they are a strong side. Ricky, Jan and Michal put in some great races but we didn’t have strength in depth to trouble them. Marek did well considering how far he had to drive to take his place.”
