Newcastle Speedway: Diamonds dip to defeat against Birmingham.

The Birmingham Brummies arrived at the Newcastle Stadium on Sunday starved of success and desperate to make amends, and with a two-point win did exactly that for their army of travelling companions.

Having suffered weather damaged tracks at both Edinburgh (Friday) and Berwick (Saturday) and two heavy defeats the Brummies skipper and former Newcastle Diamond, Jason Lyons stated publicly how good it was to find a well prepared and well looked after circuit, and boy did it show.

The eye-popping revelation was 17-year old Jack Roberts on his first ever races at Newcastle when he scored a superb match-winning 12 (+2) points, remaining unbeaten by a Diamond in his first three races including a defeat of Newcastle's number one, Josef Franc.

The excellent match went right down to the last race with Birmingham's higher confidence and determination shining through for success highlighting again that the Tyneside outfit are again desperately lacking in upper-end wins.

Newcastle Captain Richard Juul said: "It was very disappointing tonight as we've not been going too baldy of late but today I think we were very unlucky, but the big problem is we don't have enough riders who can handle the pressure situations.

"Jason [King] can come up with the goods in any race he is in and score the important points when he needs to but there is no one else there to take some of the pressure off him.

"Basically we don't have enough riders who can win enough races, especially here at home, and yes we were without Jerran who is injured but the others cannot cover his absence like they should.

"The critical heat 15s are a disaster for us as Jason can get the wins, but there is no back up for him when he needs it and our heat leaders really need to be riding with the same passion and belief that he does or this disappointment will go on.€¯
