Wednesday will be Kids Night at Industry Speedway, where winning main events has almost been child’s play for Charlie Venegas.
The 41-year-old San Bernardino native is the unquestioned master of the dirt track in The Grand arena since the start of the 2005 season, winning 31 events and a California state championship in 66 races. That’s a .469 batting average that would make Venegas a multi-millionaire if he were playing baseball.
This year, Venegas has won seven of the eight races in the facility at the Industry Hills Expo Center and at 7 p.m. Wednesday, when children 12 and under will be admitted free with a paying adult, the popular father of three will be out to match the personal-best four-race win streak that he compiled to start the season.
Buck Blair, Shawn McConnell and Jimmy Fishback have been the most consistent challengers to the man known as “The Edge.”
Blair, 30, of Huntington Beach, ended Venegas’s winning streak June 4 and shares the lead in heat race wins with Venegas, each with 13. McConnell, 49, of Brea, has won a dozen heat races, and he and Blair are the only riders other than Venegas to qualify for every main event. Fishback, 27, of Rancho Cucamonga, has 11 heat race victories and has been the runner-up three times in six main event appearances. McConnell also has a trio of second-place finishes.
Ricky Wells, 16, of Yorba Linda, the reigning Under 21 national champion, has been impressive in limited appearances, winning seven heat races and three semifinals and qualifying for four main events.
Entrance gates at The Grand open at 5:30 p.m. and racing gets under way at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, students and military, and $5 for children 6-13.
