At Redbraes today (1st June 2008) the Edinburgh Falcons Cycle Speedway Club were crowned Northern Knock Out Cup Champions.
In what turned out to be a closely contested contest between two of the five Teams, Hull and Edinburgh, the home side came out winners on 51 points from Hull on 46.
With Edinburgh and Hull tied on 13 points after the first series of five races, the home side pushed ahead to open up an eight point gap over Hull by half way. 28 points to 20. Heckmondwike and Bury level on 17 points with Astley & Tyldesley bringing up the rear with 15.
As the 2nd half progressed Hull recorded three heat wins in a row to bring the them level with Edinburgh on 32 points. Going into the last set of five, Edinburgh’s strength in depth proved too much and effectively won the match with one heat remaining. Alan Smith who only needed to finish the last heat to pick up the one point required for victory finished in style recording his third win of the day from the back.
The 2008 Northern Knock Out Cup is now the 2nd Team trophy won by the Falcons in successive seasons and one which all those involved are duly proud.
