BIRMINGHAM'S under-pressure speedway stars pulled off a stunning 46-44 win over Newcastle at Perry Barr on Wednesday.

Going into the last race Newcastle were ahead by two-points... and anything less than a Birmingham maximum would have handed the North East side at least a share of the spoils.

But skipper Jason Lyons was at his brilliant best to complete a full house (15) in the deciding race and Adam Roynon joined him for a BRC Roofing Brummies maximum to spark celebrations amongst the bumper crowd.

The injury-hit side were dealt a further blow with the loss of Jack Hargreaves through illness - but rookie youngster Jack Roberts came to the rescue with a superb 6+2 score.

"It looked like we had lost it," said manager Graham Drury. "But we stuck together as a unit and Jason Lyons and Adam Roynon did the business.

"Going into the last race two-points down we were up against it and Newcastle must have thought they had the points in the bag."

BIRMINGHAM 46: Jason Lyons 15, Adam Roynon 10+1, Henning Bager 7+1, Jack Roberts 6+2, Lee Smart 5+1, Mattia Carpanese 3, Phil Morris R/R.

NEWCASTLE 44: Josef Franc 12, Christian Henry 10, Sean Stoddart 9+4, Jason King 8+3, Daniel Giffard 5, Jamie Robertson 0, George Stancl R/R.
