The meeting was nearly called off as the rain stopped only 30 minutes before the scheduled start, leaving the track staff with hard work to do to provide some raceable surface.
It was a close affair between Lonigo andLa Favorita, with the other 3 teams far away and managing only 3 heat wins among them.
It must be said that the reigning champions Olimpia Terenzano were without the injured Bandit Guglielmo Franchetti, while the captain Andrea Maida retired after just one heat with a swollen right hand – resulting from a crash the night before while competing in the Individual Championship in Lonigo.
The first 7 heats were shared between Lonigo and La Favorita with Carpanese, Johnston and Sanche z winning their first two outing. After heat 10 La Favorita led (20 points), Lonigo in second with 17, then followed Terenzano (11), Abato (9) and Titano (3).
Milanese had an engine failure while in second and Lonigo with three straight wins got in front and led by 6. The margin was reduced to 3 after heat 15 when Carpanese fell after a tight clash with Stange, and evened when Sanchez led home Olimpia’s Joachim Kugelmann in the 16.
In heat 17 Tessari held at bay Abato’s Piekarski and Milanese, Johnston led home Stange and the Czeck Galliani in 18, then Sanchez completed his magnificent meeting with another win.
Last heat was a decider one, with both leading team on 34: Steve Johnston, in as a tactical substitution, completed his full maximum winning again in front of Kugelmann, while Stange was excluded when he fell heavily after hitting some dirt on the outside.
Among the oppositors only Kugelmann, Marco Gregnanin and Piekarski could manage a heat win, while Mattia Tadiello had a meeting under the par. The Czeck Galliani, though finishing third the night before in Lonigo (Italian Open Championship), showed little consistency on such a tricky track, while the fast improving youngster Mattia Cavicchioli had a day to remember with his 8 points. Next round in Lonigo – Saturday, May 3rd.
