An excellent trophy challenge for the chairs. Some torrid fast and
furious close racing.
Bent wheel guards and a broken fairing were just part of the day as the five units charged around the Oreti circuit. Some excursions to the infield in the heat of the moment ensured eyes were really on the next heat. Fraser Gillespie and David Uitentuis drew first blood with a win in heat one.
Shaun Kerr and Robin Poole picked up 2nd place and then the same in the next three heats. With a third in this first heat, Grant Lightfoot and Chay McWilliam then went on the attack and won all the next three races to win the Malcolm Officer Trophy with 14 points. Kerr and Poole came home 2nd with 12 while Gillespie and Uitentius took 3rd with 6 points after a DNF and disqualification.
Southland Sidecar trophy challenge was won by Kerr and Poole over the holders, Gillespie and Uitentius. This is held each meeting for the
Oreti club members only with the defenders facing a challenge from the
combination who scores the most points at the days racing.
Support Solos were very even with three riders, Pete Stenning, Barry
O’Brien and Anthony Knowles all tied on 8 points. On count back the
placing’s were recorded in the order stated. Ryan Moss was very unlucky not to feature as he was level with Knowles and one point behind Stenning before the final heat. This was abandoned when he was slightly injured after executing an excellent drop to avoid a fallen competitor.
Knowles also won the Junior Solos on 17 points from Jake MacRae (14),
Adam Wilson (13), and Jake Gillespie (12). The seven juniors put on some good racing and it was double duty and good results for Knowles in his first meeting back after injury.
