Canterbury Motorcycle Speedway Club in association with John McCallum, are running an extra meeting to benefit the Moore Park local riders, Grant Tregoning and Andrew Aldridge.
They have dipped into their pockets and also sought sponsorship for the event. A twilight meeting on Saturday February 2nd at 5.30pm is scheduled to give both riders some racing at a higher level. Both are off to compete overseas this coming season. Tregoning, the New Zealand Under 21 Champion, will contest a World Qualifying round while Aldridge heads to England for a season with Rye House.
Elf Oil All Stars will ride off against a NZ Invitation team in an
English format. The Elf Oil All Stars team will be led by the former
three time NZ Champion, Jason Bunyan who is also the captain of The Isle Of Wight English Premier League team. He will be joined by current NZ Solo Champion and Isle Of Wight team member, Andrew Bargh. Bargh had a successful season at Oxford in the Conference league and took in some rides at Premier level last year.
These professional speedway riders will be joined by another ex professional rider, Michael Long who will come out of retirement for the meeting. Jade Mudgway also rode in several meetings in the UK last season will also join these riders.
Mudgeway was the leading North Island points scorer in the Ivan Mauger North vs South encounter in January and may be joined by Mitchell McHardy who rode well in the Mauger events. The full teams are not yet finalised but will consist of seven riders each, one of whom will be an up and coming rider in the sport.
Tregoning and Aldridge will lead the invitation team with some of the
Oreti riders Andrew Tree, Alex Cunningham and Nelson’s Sean Cox. Former International rider Larry Ross may also ride in the meeting as he has had a close relationship with Aldridge, trying to get him up speed so he can tackle the English scene with confidence. Supporting events will
include Junior Solos, Side Cars and B grade senior and Classic races.
Fifteen year old dispensated West Coast rider Cory Lang is in with a
real chance to get a call up as the up and coming rider for the NZ
Invitation team.
