With the rest of the country gripped by World Cup fever, the Whitchurch MCC hosted Round 2 of the 2006 FGA Championship at Malpass in Cheshire,United Kingdom and the event was blessed with glorious weather.
This was great for the spectators, but difficult for the riders who never the less, put on a super show of track action.
The meeting got underway with the Golden Helmet Nominated Challenge races and the Junior Helmet was won by Chris Timms, who took the award from defending champion Claire Frays and Gary Leadbitter.
In the Senior event,Steve Carvill defended his title against the challenge of Adrian Guest and Ross Wharton.
In the Cub Class the long distance travellers Rocco Cassale and Callum Roberts raced hard all day with Cassale taking the overall victory.
The Junior class produced its fair share of thrills and spills with the grass remaining strangely slippery despite the hot conditions.Tom Perry again came out on top with a maximum points haul, but showed his class,by coming through the field when required to do so.
Taking second was James Williams who overcame a nasty tumble in practice to race to an impressive runners up position.Chris Timms added a third position to his Golden Helmet success, and Claire Frays and Gary Leadbitter shared fourth.Steve Frays took a well earned 6th place with a controlled display of riding which belied his lack of racing experience.
Seventh and eight places were taken by the Guest Brothers. with Michael coming out on top this week, although Richard missed a heat through mechanical gremlins. The 9th place finisher was Sam Carvill from Coventry, who never the less, has upped his game tremendously this season.

Another healthy entry of Senior riders, guaranteed a day of great racing and the overall win was taken by Sam Flowers from Wolverhampton who just about saw off the spirited challenge of Mick Jones.Steve Carvill raced hard and fast, and survived a nasty coming together with Mark Evans to take third overall on the day. Both riders received attention after the fall with Evans withdrawing from his last ride.Fourth was taken by Paul Timms who scored many of his points,as ever,by coming through the pack with some great overtakes.
Performance of the day was undoubtedly from meeting organiser Mike Flynn who rolled back the years with a mix of great starts and text book peg line riding to take a superb fifth place.Flynn's finishing position could undoubtedly have been higher, if the extreme heat had not caused him to retire from his final race. The final top six position was grabbed by Shaun Stoddard who has improved greatly this year and looking like he will be pushing hard for an overall top six place come the end of season.
The meeting also marked the first Senior appearance of former Junior Champion Ross Wharton, who acquitted himself well and looks well capable of mixing it with the "big boys".
The next round of the Championship takes place on the 24th June when the series makes a visit to a new track located in Crewe.
