The battle for superiority between the world’s top ice racers will continue this week end as the action moves to the Horst Dohm Eis-Stadion in the Berlin suburb of Wilmersdorf.
Officials have been working for several weeks now to prepare for the visit of the Ice Gladiators. Unlike the natural tracks of eastern Europe the track in Berlin is laid onto a skating surface so will have to be several centimetres thicker, perhaps four times deeper than the regular surface.
The chill comes from below and will not be helped by outside temperatures which are unlikely to fall below zero in the build up to the event so the long experience of the German ‘trackmeisters’ will be put to good use in producing the correct quality of ice.
