We are pleased to announce that we will be running the second annual Worldspeedway.com Rider of the Year competition and voting is open now.
The competition starts today and speedway fans from around the world can send us their entries up until midnight Sunday 21st December.
Fans can vote by tweeting us, posting a message to our Facebook page or emailing us directly.
Last year’s competition was a massive success and we received over 2000 votes from speedway fans across the globe. Once again you can help us spread the word by re-tweeting us, liking our Facebook page and sharing this article as well as telling everyone you know to send in their votes.
The 2013 award was won by Great Britain’s Tai Woffinden, not only for his world title heroics but his remarkable charity work and fantastic league form in Europe. Woffy beat Russian star Emil Sayfutdinov for the WSROTY title just like he did in the world championship race whilst in third was Australia’s Darcy Ward.
So who will you be voting for this year? Here are a few of the contenders;
American veteran and 2014 World Champion Greg Hancock must start as one of the favourites for the title after his amazing year. The 44 year old Californian picked up his third individual world title in 2014. The title confirmed Hancock as the most successful American in Speedway World Championship history.
2013 WSROTY Tai Woffinden will also be in with a shout after an injury plagued season. The young Brit put up a fantastic fight to retain his world title before finally finishing fourth whilst he also won the British Championship for the second time.
Last year’s WSROTY runner up Emil Sayfutdinov may not have raced in the Grand Prix series this year but the popular Russian went on to win the Speedway European Championships despite still suffering from injuries he sustained in 2013 at the start of the year.
Polish star Krzysztof Kasprzak is also a strong contender for the title. The Leszno born 30 year old had his best ever season finishing second to Hancock in the Grand Prix series and also winning the Polish individual championship.
Then there is the rider everyone loves to hate, speedway own pantomime villain. Denmark’s own three time world champion Nicki Pedersen. The Dane had an all-round good year finishing third in the world title race and third behind Sayfutdinov and Peter Kildemand in the European Championships.
But the voting isn’t limited to these riders alone there are plenty to choose from including the likes of Dane Peter Kildemand who finished second in the SEC, Jason Doyle who qualified for his first SGP series after a great season on track and new World Junior Champion Piotr Pawlicki. So let us know who you think was the rider of the year by the 21st December to help them stand a chance of winning.
The winner will be announced early in the New Year.
