Long track motorcycle racing at the Muswellbrook Showground arena signed off with a bang last Saturday (May 14).
It is the final occasion that the Kurri Kurri Motor Cycle Club will promote a long track meeting at Muswellbrook and fans were treated to a program of exciting action with nearly every event having some heated battles if not for the race lead then for the minor placings.
There was never any class where the results were taken for granted until the last race in that class.
The honour of being the last race winner at Muswellbrook was claimed by Tim Heffernan in wrapping up the 500cc Longtrack Slider class with his second race win over the four rounds. Strider Horton finished runner-up overall as both Daniel Mason and James Bevan won one round but ruined their chances by failing to score in one of the rounds.
The biggest cheer of the day was saved by West Wyalong rider Rod Anderson who fired up his big Harley Davidson to snatch the overall victory in the Kenny Russell Memorial Twin Cylinder class. Anderson’s battles with Kurri Kurri club members Steaven Dein and Kurt Close saw positions swapped constantly as the Harley overpowered its rivals down the straights before often being outmanoeuvred in the corners
The busiest rider on the program also proved to be the most successful as Jackson Jeffrey triumphed in both the Pro Open and Muswellbrook Open classes.
The other wins in the senior MX classes were shared by the local Bennett brothers with Daniel and Josh taking a win each.
The likes of Alan Macdonald, Ben Hammond, Eric Smaller and Marty McNamara were also involved in plenty of close, hard racing that kept the fans entertained.
Rod O’Meley and passenger Beau Stangl took the honours in the Dirt Track Sidecar class again after some close battles with Paul Marko / Neil O’Meley and Darryl Woodhead / Rodney Hope.
The 13 to under 16 years class confirmed that the future of the sport is in good hands as Hunter Valley rider Sean McLellan took the honours ahead of Hunter Anderson (son of Rod) from West Wyalong while Josh Macdonald, Bayley James, Tyson Snow and Keiran Gaskin also showed out well.
Stacey Scott looked very composed on the way to winning the Womens class.
The only drama of the day was a spectacular fall where Vincent Burt parted company from his machine which then bounced over the safety fence into the pit area.
