Berwick Speedway: Bandits Miss Out On Tweed / Tees Trophy- But Add Another Injury.

Berwick’s A & J Scott-sponsored speedway Bandits raced down at a cold South Tees Motor Park last night in an attempt to win the Tweed / Tees Trophy from the Redcar Bears last night.

Pole Marcin Rempala has fallen foul of the tape touching rule several times in his short time with the Bandits and was instantly hit by the referee in Heat One, but came out for the restart from the 15 metre handicap only to be excluded from a first bend clash that saw him hit the deck when all four went for the same spot.

Redcar took a 4-2 at the third try, and hit Berwick’s reserves for a maximum 5-1 to go 9-3 up after Heat two, but Michal Makovsky, enjoying a revival of form of late made a great gate to win with his skipper Paul Clews exchanging places with James Grieves, winning the battle for second in the Berwick 1-5 to haul them back to within two of the Bears.

Another home 5-1 to Redcar’s guest Aaron Summers and Tomas Suchanek restored the six point cushion before Peter Clarke, the referee excluded Grieves from the fifth for riding wider and wider with Grzegorz Stróżyk getting perilously close to the fence.

It was the Bear who fell and then advised to withdraw from the meeting on medical grounds with the re-run a 3-3 following leader Stróżyk losing control and allowing Joe Haines through.

In a slow-run and disrupted night with falls and stoppages Heat seven eventually restarted without a sore and also withdrawn Makovsky (who was complaining of an injured left shoulder) won by Clews with Mudgway in third to keep the Bandits in touch for the trophy and the win on the night.

But the Bears moved ahead to eight up again before the sides exchanged 5-1s, the second a gifted Bears maximum when Clews fell on the last lap with the score at 34-26 with five races to go.

Rempala was landed with a 15 metre handicap for again anticipating too quickly the start, and left Berwick floundering on a 5-1 against them in Heat 11 allowing Clews in as a tactical ride in the 12th which he won in fine style for six points in a 3-6 to pull the Bandits three closer again at 42-33.

Lee Complin roared to a superb victory in the 13th soaring round both Summers and Gary Havelock on bends two and three to share the race with the trophy still sitting on a knife-edge, but a 5-1 to the Bears in Heat 14 sealed the destination of the silverware on Teesside with Berwick having Makovsky on the sidelines for an undetermined time, Rempala very sore and Stróżyk falling no less than five times all night.

Battered and bruised but ready to fight another day.
