Poole Castle Cover Pirates couldn't halt the resurgence of form of the Coventry Bees who have scraped into the final play-off position.
After the 53-42 defeat the Pirates then delivered something of a shock decision in opting to go to Wolverhampton on Monday night (September 13th) in the first leg of the title deciding play-offs leaving Peterborough and Coventry to slug out the second semi-final.
The Pirates ensured their final meeting prior to the cut-off deadline of midnight 9th September went to a dramatic climax but had they not conceeded key points when in heat winning positions then they could well have ruined Coventry's dreams.
Twice Jason Doyle was amongst the points when mistakes left him squandering and crucially, when alongside tactical ride partner Chris Holder, young Darcy Ward paid the price of over-riding and crashed out. That denied the Pirates an 8-1 which would have changed the whole complexion of the meeting. But with Coventry running out winners on the night and Lakeside unable to secure the necessary points at Swindon it was the Hammers that finally miss out on the play-offs.
Poole boss Matt Ford, who was forced to miss the meeting as he was out of the country said "I was following all the developments tonight from afar and weighed up all the options and although we would have jumped at the chance of riding at Lakeside I just feel that with the way results have been falling then the option of taking on Wolverhampton could work in our favour." Coventry 53 - P.Pawlicki 12+2, C.Harris 12+1, K.Kasprzak 9+2, E.Kennett 7+1, L.Bridger 6+2, B.Barker 4+2, R.Sweetman 3
Poole 42 - L.Madsen 9+1 (1,1',1,3,3), D.Watt 9 (1,2,3,3,0), D.Ward 9 (2,3,4^,FD), C.Holder 8+1 (1',0,6^,0,1), B.Pedersen 6 (3,1,1,1), J.Doyle 1+1 (FD,0,1',0), A.Mroczka 0 (0,0,0)
