Birmingham Speedway: No joy for Brum at KL.

Birmingham finished off their regular Premier League programme last night with a defeat at King’s Lynn's Norfolk Arena.

It was a much improved performance following Monday’s heavy loss at Newcastle, but it could have been so much better for Graham Drury’s men as they led for part of the match only to see it slip away in the closing stages.

The Stars held an early 14-10 lead, but the Brummies pulled level when Jason Lyons and Justin Sedgmen fired in a 5-1 in heat 5.

And their hopes of picking up a positive result were further raised when Richard Sweetman and Klaus Jakobsen put them 19-17 ahead with a shock 4-2 over Kozza Smith and Olly Allen in race 6.

Steve Johnston and Aaron Summers then made in 23-19 with another 4-2 in heat 7, only for King’s Lynn to immediately reduce the deficit to 25-23 in heat 8.

The Brummies, however, looked set to increase their advantage when Summers and Johnston held a 4-2 in heat 10, but fate was to befall them when Summers retired whilst leading on the final lap. The gifted home 4-2 levelled up the scores at 30-30.

That stroke of misfortune proved to be the turning point as Allen and Tomas Topinka inflicted a first defeat of the night on Lyons in heat 13, only for former Perry Barr favourite Adam Roynon and Smith to wrap up the win for the Stars with another maximum in the penultimate race.

KING’S LYNN 49: Tomas Topinka 10+2, Olly Allen 10, Kozza Smith 8+1, Adam Roynon 8+1, Lasse Bjerre 6, Cal McDade 5, Chris Mills 2+1

BIRMINGHAM 41: Richard Sweetman 11, Jason Lyons 10, Steve Johnston 8, Justin Sedgmen 6+1, Aaron Summers 2+1, Kyle Newman 2, Klaus Jakobsen 2
