Jay Herne, son of Bristol Bulldogs legend Phil Herne, is to make his racing return to the sport at Weymouth Speedway on Friday evening when the Wildcats take on the Bulldogs in a challenge match at the Wessex Stadium from 7.15pm.

The 25-year-old from Sydney broke several vertebrae in a crash at Newport Speedway on March 28th but has received medical clearance to resume his career. He explained: 'I've been practising at the Sittingbourne track in Kent and was delighted to receive the invitation to put on a racejacket that meant so much to my Dad when he raced for the Bristol Bulldogs at the Eastville Stadium in the late 1970s. I know how much the name of Phil Herne means to the diehard Bristol fans and despite my long lay-off I will be giving it a good shot on Friday. To come back in a challenge match is ideal for me and we will have to see where it goes from there.'

Jay will join riders such as Simon Lambert, Aaron Baseby and Shane Hazelden in the Bulldogs line-up.

Commented prospective Bristol promoter Andy Hewlett who is in charge of a planning application on a 35-acre site at Avonmouth to rekindle the sport: 'To have Phil's son racing for his father's ex-club is a dream move for us and we are all behind his recovery as he sits astride a 500cc speedway machine again. We are grateful to Phil Bartlett of Weymouth Speedway for the invitation and it keeps the Bulldogs name alive as we pursue our negotiations with Bristol City Council.'
