Grand Prix star and former Scunthorpe Scorpion Tai Woffinden is set to race at the Eddie Wright Raceway for the first time in two years when he lines up to help the club raise money for their air fence fund and in honour of their former team manager, the late Kenny Smith.
The Kenny Smith Memorial meeting will take place on Friday 15th October (start time 7.30pm) and Tai, who lives locally but races for Wolverhampton in the Elite League plus Vargarna in Sweden and Czestochowa in Poland, is the first rider to be announced.
Club Promoter Rob Godfrey is delighted that Woffinden has agreed to take part in the meeting. “As always we want to end the season with some great meetings and I suspect that Kenny’s meeting or the Young Shield Final will be the last one for 2010. I’m confident we will have some more top names take part and I’m sure it will be the strongest field we’ve had at the Eddie Wright Raceway. Of course Tai is outstanding around our track after having two years here but he didn’t win on his last visit”.
“I’m sure that with our airfence and a high quality field we’re going to see an absolutely outstanding race meeting. Last year we had all sorts of problems hit us and in particular the rearrangement of the Polish Playoff Final hit us to the point that we had to make it a team event. Hopefully we’ll not have such problems this year and it can be as we always intended, a 16-rider individual meeting”.
The meeting is being run to honour Kenny Smith who died last year after a long battle with cancer. His contribution through the first five years of Scunthorpe Speedway on Normanby Road will never be forgotten by those involved with the club who, like so many of the fans, took Kenny to their hearts. The 2010 meeting is the second time that monies raised from the Kenny Smith Memorial Meeting will go towards the purchase of new airfence panels. The 2009 meeting contributed a large percentage of the money towards the replacement fence that is on turns three and four whilst it is hoped this season’s meeting will enable the club to replace the fence at the opposite end of the track.
The Scorpions next meeting is set to be in the Quarter-final of the Young Shield later in September but this Friday the National League Scunthorpe Saints take on the title-chasing Newport Hornets at the Eddie Wright Raceway (Friday 10th October, 7.30pm) hoping to climb to seventh place in the table. The following day see the BRISCA Formula One stockcars come to town (Saturday 11th September, 6pm) with the sport’s two dynasties, the Smiths from Lancashire (Paul and Stuart), and the Wainmans (Frankie and Danny) from Yorkshire set to do battle in a World Championship Qualifying Round.
