The Newcastle “Sapphire Engineering” Diamonds’ and they opposition last night at the Newcastle Stadium had one aim in sight – the Premier League’s second spot, and the clash was a vital part of that achievement.
And following a dominant show their 25-point win put the Diamonds right there, one place behind the champions, the Edinburgh Monarchs….for now at least.
Two-up after the second, Rene Bach, fresh from his Under-21 World Team Cup success with Denmark, made an awful gate but coming round the second bend of the second lap weaved his way inside Aaron Summers and then outside Steve Johnston to lead and win with a standing ovation in another 4-2 to put Newcastle four up.
Mark Lemon looked set for second in Heat Four, but coming off the last bend of the race shot hard under Richard Sweetman to turn the 3-3 into another 4-2 setting the score at 15-9.
Bach set the placed alight again in Heat Five to again find a massive burst of power to pass Justin Sedgmen and former Diamond, Jason Lyons for another well-earned three points.
Lemon and Dakota North flew from the tapes in Heat Eight and remained up front untroubled by the pursuing Sedgmen in the first maximum 5-1 of the meeting to send the Diamonds 30-18 up, looking odds off for a big Monday night win.
In the ninth Sneddon took a solid lead from the gate with Bach shooting round Richard Sweetman and eventually he took the lead from his own partner in a second consecutive 5-1, whilst Larsen made a physical pass under Johnston who ended up just holding on to his machine with the Diamond taking the win as Newcastle moved up again to 39-21.
Lyons was placed on a tactical ride for double points in the 11th but was out battled into the first bend by Lemon who extended th lead for a big win and restricted Lyons’ score to only four.
The tactical ride was passed on to Summers in the next and he did the business perfectly with a solid win for six points in a 3-6 to haul the Brummies three points closer at 46-31 whilst in the 13th Larsen and Lemon hammered home another huge 5-1 to top 50 points with two heats left on the card.
Outscoring the Brummies comfortably 9-3 over the final two races Newcastle hit 60 for the fourth time this season and leap-frogged over Birmingham to place themselves in second place in the current table.
Newcastle’s manager George English said: “Now we’ve achieved second place again we need to secure it and make sure of the silver medal, so we can assure any opponents for the remaining league matches that we’ll be giving them all a hard run for their money.”
