Former Plymouth rider Lee Smart made a successful return to the St Boniface Arena on Friday evening when he helped Newport to a 46-44 National Trophy win over Plymouth.
Smart dropped only one point as a guest for Australian Todd Kurtz, who was on duty for the Newport Premier League side at Somerset.
Home number one Nicki Glanz made it third time lucky when he beat Smart in a last heat decider after missing out to the visiting star on their two previous meetings.
There were never more than four points between the sides throughout a keenly contested meeting and Newport had a four-point advantage going into the final heat.
Glanz and skipper Seemond Stephens were the early leaders for Plymouth as they headed for a 5-1 that would have enabled the Devils to snatch a draw. But, on the last lap, Smart eventually eased past Stephens to secure Newport’s away victory.
Plymouth: Nicki Glanz 13 (5 rides), Jaimie Pickard 6+2 (4), Matt Bates 5+2 (4), Seemond Stephens 9 (5), Mark Simmonds 8+1 (4). Reserves: David Gough 0 (2), Ben Reade 3 (6).
Newport: Lee Smart 14 (5), Luke Priest (rider replacement), Tim Webster 9 (5), Tony Atkin 4 (4), Kyle Newman 7 (5). Reserves: James White-Williams 10+1 (7), Tom Young 2+2 (4).
