Berwick Speedway: Bandits have another Polish prince.

Berwick’s A & J Scott-sponsored speedway Bandits – having proved themselves as the best team in the north over the past two months – will be aiming to add to their trophy cabinet on Saturday, when a powered-up sloth of Redcar Bears come to Shielfield Park.

However, the Berwick squad will be augmented by the first-time inclusion of 22-year-old Polish rider Grzegorz Stróżyk.

“We have lost the services of ‘The Raj’ – that’s Michal Rajkowski – for the season,” explained team boss Ian Rae, who has revitalised the Bandits since taking control of the team in July.

“For Saturday night, and with Redcar clearly intent on retaining the Tees-Tweed Trophy by beefing up their team with some heavy hitters, we thought we’d bring another Polish prince on board.

“Grzegorz has been over here since his Polish club Wanda Krakow finished their season a couple of weeks ago, living out of his van and begging races from as many British clubs would let him ride trials after their matches.

“Although several clubs have shown interest in taking him on, it was only Berwick who went to the trouble of getting him a British licence and clearing his permission to start racing here – so it was Berwick he has agreed to race for!”

Stróżyk, who races alongside former Bandit Jacek Rempala in Poland, is not yet joining Berwick on a full-time basis, but a good impression on Saturday might give the Shielfield side food for serious future thought.

“This will be a serious test, not just for young Mr Stróżyk but for all of us,” said a Berwick spokesperson last night.

“In addition to having former World Champion Gary Havelock as their captain, the Bears have drafted in Elite League rider Stuart Robson and the young Australian Aaron Summers to boost their chances – despite our proud record against the northern teams, we’ll have to be at our best again on Saturday!”

In addition to the first-class speedway racing on offer, Shielfield Park will be a fun place to be on Saturday, with the club offering free entry to all accompanied children for a Family Fun Night, featuring a bouncy castle and many other children’s attractions.
